There is now a fix to this problem and it is called Volfix.
When Volfix is enabled, the volume buttons of your device will control the ringtone and notification volume by default. It will control the media volume while you are listening to any kind of sounds and it will control the "in call" volume while there is an ongoing call.
Volfix requires to be enabled as an accessibility service in order to listen for volume button press events and to map the buttons to control the ring and notification volume instead of media volume.
Please note that at the moment Volfix only works while the screen is on.

The newest Samsung update solved the screenshot issue, but Volfix no longer seems to work. And turning volume down also means turning alarms down while notifications l go untouched. It should be notifications and rings that go down while alarms remain at preset volume.
used version 2.1 on my sony xperia and it worked great. but had to update phone for 4g calling. hope this version (2.2) works just as good.
What a relief! Thank you! I wanted the volume slider buttons to control ring tones and notifications so I don't have to open them in settings each time. This does exactly that. Buttons control ring tone and notifications unless media is playing. Then buttons control media. Works perfectly.
This is a must for everyone with a new Pixel phone.
I've tried a few different volume apps but THIS IS THE ONE TO GET to fix the annoying default Pixel volume control. Thank you!!!
Does not work - with this app installed and enabled with full permissions, when I adjust the volume rocker it still controls the media volume and not the ringer volume even after restarting the phone. This is on a Google Pixel with the latest android version 15.
