NetGuard uses the Android VPNService to route traffic to itself, so it can be filtered on-device instead of on a server. Only one app can use this service at the same time, which is a limitation of Android.

I blocked a game app Wi‑Fi and mobile-data access in NetGuard, turned Wi‑Fi off in the phone, and denied nearby-device access. The game still appeared to connect and play as usual, despite being described as playable offline; even after force-stop. NetGuard occupies Android’s VPN slot, which prevents DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection from running. For me, the trade-off wasn’t worth it: NetGuard didn’t block the connection in my test, and it displaced the app-tracking protection I was using.
best thing since sliced bread
